In Joshua 4, God allows Israel to pass through the Jordan with the arc of the covenant, then instructs 12 men to take a stone each, to set as a 'sign' or reminder of this encounter with God.
"When your children ask in time to come, 'what do these stones mean to you?' then you shall tell them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord...so these stones shall be to the people of Isreael a memorial forever." 4:6-7
Altars can carry stories of God's presence with us.
Much like building an altar of remembrance, we want to create with the intention to remember who God is, and how we've encountered Him.
